Create a bootable CD or DVD with or without floppy

Create a bootable CD or DVD with or without floppy

Create a bootable CD or DVD with or without floppy

With the CD-ROM available on almost every computer nowaday, floppy drives become a history. However, for those who find computers a hobby, might run into a situation when they need to create a bootable CD that works just like the old floppy disk. Unfortunately, to do this, you still need a floppy drive to read your bootup floppy disk. Wait, the good news is, you can just down load a bootable ISO image and burn it to a CD. And even better, we have a copy of an ISO image right here. You can download this image and follow the instructions below, or you can do a web search for more options.

The information on this article will guide you step-by-step how to create a bootable CD/DVD, either using a bootup floppy disk or a boot image file. You will end up having a bootable CD or DVD, with CD-ROM driver supported, that could startup your PC and bring up the command prompt. This is going to be a good starting point, then you can run other utilities such as hard drive ghost, etc..

Many current CD/DVD burning software support the bootable feature. If you already have your favorite burning software, look around to find the bootable option. For this article, I will use the steps and sample screen-shots with the burning tool called Nero.

You will need a boot disk (floppy) or a bootable ISO image to start. If you don't have one, you can download an ISO image here. This boot image is Windows-98 based, which means it uses the Windows 98 bootup sequence, which should do what we need. You can also download different boot disk images from the internet. I've found bootdisk.com has a very good collection.

I assume that you already have Nero installed. Also, it is highly recommended to use a rewritable disc so you can redo the process if you have to.

1. Launch Nero Burning ROM
2. At the New Compilation Window, select "CD" from the drop-down menu and select "CD-ROM (Boot)" for CD, (or select "DVD" and "DVD-ROM (Boot)" for DVD)

3. If you use a bootup floppy disk, insert the floppy disk and select "Bootable logical drive..."

4. If you use an image file, select "Image File" then click "Browse" to browse to the image.

At the "Open" Window, browse to the location where you saved the boot image and choose the image you wish to use and click "Open" (you might need to change the "Files of type" to "All Files" in order to see files with different extensions.)

 5. Click "New" at the New Compilation Window.

 6. Nero New Compilation Window disappears and Nero brings up its main screen where you can add more files to the CD/DVD if you wish. For example, adding a "ghost" folder with the file "ghost.exe" as follows.
Once you're done adding all the files you wish to, click on the "Burn" icon.

7. At the "Burn Compilation" Window, select "Burn"!

PC troubleshooting tips

PC troubleshooting tips

Computer tips and tricks as well as software, hardware, internet that help make you more productive and your overall computer experience a lot more enjoyable.
Nothing can put a damper on productivity quite like a computer that crashes on a regular basis. Sometimes, a crash is preceded by the dreaded “blue screen of death” or another warning; other times, a computer simply shuts off without any warning at all. In either case, the end result is a whole lot of frustration, aggravation and lost work. If your computer has been crashing frequently, you’d probably like to put an end to it. Unfortunately, getting to the bottom of things if often easier said than done. The following tips about improving your computer’s performance, though, are excellent places to begin.
Possibility(1): Corrupted System Registry Files

Every Windows-based PC has something called a Windows registry. The registry contains several files that are integral to the performance and operation of your computer. Over time, some of those files can become corrupted, be misplaced or get lost altogether. When that happens, the system registry becomes compromised – and frequent crashes are all-too-common symptoms. The best way to rule this possibility in or out is by running a Windows registry cleaning program. Such programs scan your Windows registry for problems then automatically make repairs. If you run a registry cleaner and the crashes persist, they are probably being caused by a different issue.
Possibility (2): Disorganized Files

Windows operating systems handle file organization in a way that isn’t very intuitive. Basically, they break files up and fit them into gaps in the computer’s memory. As time goes by, these disorganized files can prompt frequent crashes. Luckily, a great optimization solution is built right into Windows-based PCs: the disk defragmentation utility. Although its location on a computer varies, you can generally locate it within the System and Security section inside the Control Panel. By running a defrag once every few months, you may be able to keep those pesky computer crashes at bay.
Possibility (3): Malicious Software

Malicious software can take many different forms. Sometimes, it’s a virus that is accidentally unleashed after opening a strange email; other times, its adware that tags along with other information that is automatically downloaded from a website. Whatever type it is, there’s no question that malicious software can wreak havoc on a computer’s performance. Happily, there are many topnotch programs out there that regularly scan your computer for the presence of such problems – and that help guard against them, too. Buy one, install it and use it regularly; your crash issues may come to an end.
Possibility (4): Too Little Available Memory

When you buy a new computer, it feels like there’s no end to the amount of memory that it has. Of course, this isn’t true at all. As never-ending as the available memory on your PC may initially seem, the fact is that it can be depleted with incredible speed. You can find out for sure by checking the information within “My Computer.” If it appears that your available memory is low, you can use a PC cleanup program to remove unnecessary files; such programs remove things like temporary Internet files and other file debris that can suck away much-needed memory.
Possibility (5): Overheating

If you’ve run through all of the preceding possibilities and continue experiencing frequent crashes, a hardware issue could be to blame. An easy one to rule out is overheating. A computer’s CPU, or central processing unit, includes a fan that is designed to keep it running cool. Sometimes, the fan wears down and doesn’t work as efficiently; other times, it’s just not able to handle the work that your computer has to do. In either case, buying a bigger, better fan isn’t very expensive. If it puts an end to your PC crashing problem, it will have been more than worth it.
Don’t Put Up with Frequent Crashes!

As discussed, frequent computer crashes can be triggered by a wide variety of issues. Luckily, many of these issues are relatively easy to remedy. Work your way through the preceding list; chances are, you’ll be able to pinpoint the problem and put an effective cure to work. Nine times out of ten, a computer simply needs a little bit of routine maintenance to get it back on track again. In the future, keep these points in mind. Any time you buy a new computer, keep up with its basic maintenance right from the get-go. By doing that, you could avoid “blue screen of death” and crashing problems altogether – and that’s something that you’re bound to appreciate!

OTT Guide to Understanding Google Chrome Advanced Features

Google Chrome is a pretty awesome browser and each new update always brings an additional cool or useful feature. Chrome is a special browser in my view because it’s created by Google. For this reason, Chrome has some features that utilize the advanced technology that Google has developed over the last decade with their other products like search, docs, etc

ost, I’m going to go through some of the advanced options and settings in Google Chrome and explain what those features do. In some cases, you may want to enable them and in other cases, you may want to disable the advanced options. Either way, it’s good to know what your choices are and how they can benefit you.

To get started, let’s go to the Advanced Settings section in Chrome. Click on the Customize button in the top right corner and click on Settings.

Then scroll down and click on the Show advanced settings link at the bottom of the page. Here you will see all of the advanced settings, some of which I will talk about more in this post.
Privacy/Web Services

All of the interesting advanced features of Chrome are under the Privacy section in advanced settings. Here you can clear the cache, manage cookies and pop-ups and enable or disable the use of a couple of web services.

Up until a couple of days ago, Google Chrome was the only major browser that did not have an option for enabling Do Not Track. It’s now been added as an option under the Privacy section.

do not track

If you want to enable this option, check the Send a ‘Do Not Track’ request with your browsing traffic box. This basically will notify each website that you wish not to be tracked while browsing. Note that this doesn’t guarantee your privacy in any way, it just tells a website that this is your preference. It’s up to the website to actually heed the request. They can completely ignore it if they like and capture any data they like. When you check the box, you’ll get a pop up message explaining this:

This option is not enabled by default, so you will have to manually enable it if you want the feature. Another advanced option is the Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors checkbox.

What exactly does this option do? Well, it basically can help you find an alternative website if the site you are trying to visit is down. Or let’s say you type in an address and it cannot be resolved to a web page, Chrome will try to give you helpful options. For example, if i type in abcnewsss.com, I will get the Oops! Google Chrome could not find abcnewsss.com, but will also get a suggestion for the correct site.

This has proved to be very helpful in a lot of situations when I could not remember the exact URL for a website, but had a slight inkling. Using their advanced algorithms and huge datasets, you always end up getting the right answer or the answer you are looking for.

This is another really useful feature that utilizes Google’s advanced algorithms to give you suggestions as you type in the address bar. The feature will show you related matches from your browsing history, related web searches and list popular websites that might match what you are typing.

As you can see in the example above, if I type in car prices, I automatically get a couple of extra options including car prices in india, kbb.com and car prices in usa. This is cool because I’m currently in India and it detected my location and then gave me a location-specific option. The next option, Predict network actions to improve page load performance, can speed up your browsing experience in Google Chrome.

Chrome has an awesome prerendering technology that will automatically prerender a page before you click on it if it feels there is a high chance you will visit that page next. I have found browsing to be faster, especially when using the Internet on a slow Internet connection.

The Enable phishing and malware protection is an advanced option you should definitely enable. Google is the king of indexing web pages on the Internet and therefore it knows a ton about each page, including whether the page is spammy, has malware, or is a phishing website.

Chrome will give you a huge warning page telling you that the site may contain malware and could harm your computer. You even have to check a box and then click Proceed Anyway to actually visit the site. I have found that this warning isn’t always accurate, but the percentage of false positives is tiny. There have been a bunch of times when I clicked on a link from an email or from Facebook and didn’t visit the site because Chrome notified me of possible malware.

The last web service in Chrome is the Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors checkbox. This is really great because you can basically upgrade your spell checker in Chrome to the same spell checker that is used in Google search and Google docs.

The basic spell checker will basically match words against a dictionary, which is good, but if you check this option, you also get an advanced spell checker that understands context also. For example, if I type in Icland is an icland, you can right click and see that Google managed to figure out you were trying to type Iceland is an island.

Pretty neat! You won’t get that kind of spell checking if you don’t enable this option. These are a couple of the really useful advanced features of Chrome that you should check out if haven’t done so already. Enjoy!
